School Theatre
Theatre is a key discipline at Colegio Internacional J.H. Newman, integrated into every stage of education. It’s a powerful tool for student development—enhancing oral and body expression, stimulating creativity, building teamwork, improving improvisation skills, and boosting self-esteem.
We go out of our well-known classroom to go to the hall: a great place where there are no tables, pencils, books... there is no "matter" and yes, lots of seats, a high and wide stage, and above all, and most importantly, one's self, such as it is.
Early Childhood Education
In Early Childhood Education, drama is encouraged through activities linked to oral and physical expression. All groups participate in theatre or musical performances for the Christmas Festival and the Musical Festival.
Throughout the year, storytelling, musical performances, and theatre in English further develop drama and expressive skills.
Primary Education
In Years 3 and 4 of Primary, theatre is incorporated into the language curriculum to support oral expression.
In 3rd we learn and we use the expressive resources that we have (the use of the body, the face, the voice) and the teatro all of "actor" you must know (you never give back, use of the entire stage, improvisation...). On the basis of interventions to theirs, readings, their own creations... all that we are learning what we are going to integrate in small works to end in an end that collects all the work.
By Year 4, with those skills internalized, they work directly with written texts and literary styles—narrative, poetry, storytelling, and more—with a deeper focus on poetic expression.
Secondary and Baccalaureate
Rehearsals begin in January due to the project’s scale.
Newman Choir
The Chorus J. H. Newman is part of AGRUPACOROS, the first Grouping of Children's Choirs and Youth of the Community of Madrid.
Choral singing is a priority in our educational project. Singing together fosters beauty, cultural understanding, and emotional depth.
Educate people in the beauty, sing into a coral formation, to understand what it means to our musical tradition, it's a whole experience. Students come to the Chorus of Primary school from the age of 8as a first approach to the world coral. This is the first time that they feel the thrill of singing with others as a single voice, led by someone. Learning the posture for singing, vocalization, learning and memorizing melodies, know how to follow the directions of a Director, know how to listen while it sings for stopping voices, and above all, enjoy singing, are some of the first objectives which are marked in these early ages. When they come to the Chorus of the ESO-Bachillerato start to work with different voices, approaching the polyphony and to work with different harmonies. From the old music until you get to the spiritual or jazz passing by the tradition, Spanish, Italian, american, or african.
GUEST VISITS
ISABEL REY
Devoted heart and soul to her vocation—singing, music, and theatre—the Valencian soprano Isabel Rey has earned international acclaim for her exquisite vocal technique and refined sensitivity as a performer. She is one of the few Spanish artists to have collaborated regularly with the Salzburg Festival, and her distinguished career has seen her debut on the most prestigious opera stages around the world.
During her visit with the members of both Newman Choirs (Primary, Secondary, and Sixth Form), she shared how her career began by singing in her school choir in Valencia.
DIANA TIEGS
Born in Nampa, Idaho (USA), Diana Tiegs began her vocal and dramatic arts studies at Boise State University. After settling in Spain, she continued her training at the Escuela Superior de Canto de Madrid, completing her studies in 1997. She has refined her technique and interpretation under the guidance of Ian Baar and Miguel Zanetti.
Among her early performances are Vivaldi’s Gloria, Haydn’s The Creation, the Stabat Mater by both Pergolesi and Rossini, Honegger’s La Danse des Morts, Bach’s Magnificat, and the role of Adina in Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore.
In recent years, she has taken on roles such as Konstanze in Mozart’s The Abduction from the Seraglio, Faure’s Requiem at the Palau de la Música in Valencia, the leading soprano voice in Wolfgang Rihm’s Jakob Lenz, Beethoven’s Egmont, Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Dulcinea in Cristóbal Halffter’s opera Don Quixote at Madrid’s Teatro Real.
She is currently a member of the Spanish National Choir. Her visit to the school was part of the “Adopt a Musician” project, which included participation from members of the Primary Choir.

Newman Extracurricular Activities
Extracurricular activities (todas ellas de carácter voluntario, no lucrativo y no discriminatorio) son una de las iniciativas más significativas del colegio y una prolongación de la propuesta educativa.
Alongside offering recreational options for students’ free time, these activities are designed to foster personal growth—especially in areas where each student most naturally expresses who they are, giving space to their strongest talents and interests.
To achieve this goal, it is essential that students commit to the activities they choose for the entire school year.
ENROLMENT CONDITIONS
- Enrolment in extracurricular activities implies a year-long commitment. However, if withdrawal is necessary, it must be communicated before the 20th of the current month. Otherwise, the monthly fee will not be refunded. All withdrawals must be requested by email at nbravo@colegionewman.org. Withdrawals are not managed by the teacher running the activity.
- Registrations for all sports activities, regardless of the educational stage, must be completed through the Newman Sports Club: https://cdnewman.clupik.app/. These will not appear in the CIFRA system.
- To enroll, a separate form must be completed for each student, according to their educational stage.
- Re-enrolment is required each school year for all extracurricular activities a student wishes to continue.
- Priority will be given to students who re-enroll within the established period and who have previously participated in the same extracurricular activity. Each activity requires a minimum number of students in order to take place.
- If a student is enrolled in multiple activities, families should ensure there are no scheduling conflicts. For Early Childhood students, we recommend enrolling in no more than one extracurricular activity to allow time for free play.
- Starting in September, families can check the CIFRA platform to verify if their child has been enrolled in the selected activities.

DANCE SCHOOL (Early Childhood Education)
Our dance programme is led by the well-known dancer Maria Rosa. According to a study conducted by the University of Cádiz, dance is an activity that provides important physical benefits, perhaps the most visible, but also mental and emotional, which does not cease to be important.
Physically, dance helps develop physical strength, balance, flexibility, coordination, spatial awareness. All of this can contribute to the improvement of self-esteem, which also enhances psychological well-being, improving self-control and self-awareness, and overall balance.
At 4 years of age, children can get started in this activity, with classes that combine dance and play (pre-dance), that stimulate their motor skills and their creativity. In this way we propose to start with classical dance and flamenco together, as classical dance combines all styles. The combination of both disciplines helps develop musicality, memory, balance and the sense of rhythm.
For children over 10 years old, Funky and modern dance are also exercises that are very beneficial to both the body of children, in full development, as for their safety and expressiveness. These urban dance styles not only build coordination and rhythm but also promote physical fitness, making them two of the most effective aerobic dance forms today.

MUSIC SCHOOL (Early Childhood Education)
With this activity, children make their first contact with the basic elements that make up the language of music: melody, rhythm, harmony. Through fun and engaging group classes, they learn intuitively by participating in activities such as singing, rhythmic coordination, (music listening) auditions, dancing, and playing small instruments and percussions, etc. These experiences help them recognise and apply elements of music in practice. They also begin to become familiar with musical notation and the different families of instruments, which helps spark motivation for eventually choosing an instrument to learn.
We offer this activity starting in the second year of preschool (4-year-olds), with a focus on musical introduction and playful, group-based learning. By the third year (5-year-olds), children may also begin to explore playing a specific instrument, if they show interest.

CHOIR (PRIMARY)
The Primary School Choir is a free activity that the school has to offer outside of school hours. In this extracurricular activity, students work on aspects and virtues that choral singing can provide, such as developing sensitivity and an appreciation for beauty, teamwork, listening skills, attention, perseverance, commitment, and respect.
You don't need any previous experience, as the dynamics of the sessions helps students to learn to sing with technique and naturalness.
The Primary and Secondary School choirs are free activities. This year, we are particularly focused on the Primary School Choir, as we believe that, together with the Secondary and Adult choirs, we will continue to participate in various events, festivals, and competitions, which will likely lead us to achieve important awards, especially in the Community of Madrid.

PAINTING AND SCULPTURE (PRIMARY)
Visual Arts are much more than just mixing colours and making brushstrokes on a blank canvas. With this activity, we aim to introduce children to Fine Arts, awakening creativity and sensitivity through well-known artistic examples and the everyday environment, all through the language of art.
As it is outside the regular curriculum, this can be a perfect tool to begin developing inner peace, as painting is an art that requires patience and dedication.
Through this activity, students indirectly learn about aspects related to size, patterns, shapes, and even geometry. Additionally, art helps children develop problem-solving skills and fosters self-discipline and self-motivation. All of this takes place in a "unique" space within the school where children feel like true artists!

It depends on the adults that it remains positive. ITALIAN (CSE AND BACCAULEAREATE)
The promotion of Italian at our school (its language and culture) is a key part of our curriculum, which begins in Year 1 of Secondary School (ESO).
At Newman, we have always valued education in beauty and providing our students with a global perspective. Therefore, learning the language of "Bel Paese," as Italy is known, is part of one of our core linguistic objectives.
By offering Italian as an extracurricular activity, we also provide the opportunity for students to delve deeper into the language, advancing their learning in a faster and more comprehensive way. This allows them to prepare for official certifications. We also open the offer to external students and adults (parents) who are interested in the language and wish to begin or deepen their studies.

SPEECH AND LANGUAGE STIMULATION
Through our speech therapy service, our role is to assess, diagnose, and intervene when children at any point in their school life require extra support due to difficulties in:
Speech: Articulation problems (dyslalia), stuttering, etc.
Language: Both oral (language delays) and written (dyslexia, learning difficulties, etc.).
Communication: ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorders).
Swallowing: Issues related to proper swallowing patterns.
Our primary goal is to provide the child with a learning-friendly environment where they can acquire the necessary skills required by their surroundings. To achieve this, we utilize other skills the child has mastered, which will help them learn new content. During the learning process, we must pay close attention to the emotional aspect, so we prioritize ensuring the child comes to sessions feeling happy, comfortable, and, from there, able to start learning and consolidating the goals we have set with them.
In this sense, we will maintain communication with families via email and phone, as the schedule does not allow us to meet with parents after each session.

ROBOTICS AND GRAPHIC DESIGN (PRIMARY)
The extracurricular robotics activity is divided into two terms, with two technologies covered each term.
This way, students learn both programming and robotics simultaneously, allowing them to apply the knowledge gained in each activity to complement the other.
Pedagogical objectives:
Promote learning through discovery and tolerance to frustration when facing challenges in robot programming to make them move.
Teach basic computer science concepts and develop skills in using the mouse and keyboard (for younger primary students).
Foster collaborative and participative learning, prioritising communication as a teamwork tool.
Engage in construction activities to enhance spatial vision and logical thinking.
Stimulate imagination and creativity needed for video game design and free robot building.
Encourage curiosity for STEAM vocations (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) as these help internalise computational thinking, which is useful for problem-solving in everyday life.

Orientation Educativa
What do we do?
All people can learn and progress in learning, but not all do it the same way and with the same rhythm. In the classes we find students who for various reasons, have difficulty learning. En el International College J. H. Inclusion at Newman involves a range of strategies designed to respond appropriately to the unique characteristics and educational needs of our students.
Increasingly, as part of a collaborative teaching model, more than one teacher may be present in the classroom. This allows the lead teacher to work alongside a support teacher, enabling closer individual attention and the implementation of specific adaptations to help students learn according to their needs and abilities.
Early Childhood Education
In Early Childhood Education, the Guidance Department includes a school counselor, a psychomotor development specialist, a therapeutic pedagogy specialist (PT), and a speech and language specialist. This team works closely with classroom and subject teachers to identify and address the specific needs of each student, ensuring that every child receives the support they need.
Through classroom observation and standardized assessments, the team identifies possible learning difficulties across different areas of development. They then design targeted interventions to support students with specific educational needs, ensuring their full inclusion through direct and focused assistance. Some of our students have official educational support plans (dictámenes de escolarización) that require us to tailor objectives and content to their individual learning profiles. These students receive personalized support, both in and out of the classroom, in individual or small group settings.
Primary Education
In Primary, we have a significant number of students with neurodevelopmental diagnoses or developmental differences that require individualized support. Our aim is to ensure equal access to the academic curriculum for all students through appropriate accommodations—ranging from minor methodological adjustments to more significant curricular adaptations, depending on each student’s specific needs.

Speech and Language Therapy Department
Speech (articulation disorders, structural speech difficulties, stammering, etc.)
Oral language (language delay, developmental language disorder)
Written language (reading and writing delay, dyslexia, dysgraphia, learning difficulties related to other conditions, etc.)
Communication (Autism Spectrum Disorder or other pervasive developmental disorders)
Voice (voice disorders)
The treatment is carried out from the school schedule from 13:00h to 15:00hin individual sessions (sometimes in groups of two if it is considered appropriate and the child can benefit from it).
Before beginning therapy, and in the case that the child has not previously been assessed, an initial evaluation will be carried out to identify specific difficulties and determine the starting point for intervention.
As well as working directly on the child’s difficulties, we maintain close contact with the family to provide support and guidance regarding their child’s needs.

Newman Emprende
Some years ago a group of parents, moved by the social and economic context, they decided to jointly address this circumstance, and, of that concern, was born Newman Embarkswith a range of businesses and services available to the families of the school and conducive to a better situation for everyone.
Newman Emprende is rooted in the real and vibrant community of the Colegio Internacional J.H. Newman. It is within this shared reality that personal encounters and human relationships naturally grow. Instead of traditional networking, which starts by looking for friendly businesses, we begin by connecting with friends—who happen to run businesses.
The initiative reflects a truly collective effort involving every part of the school community: from the school leadership, the parent association (AMPA), and the Newman Sports Club, to the collaboration of teachers and maintenance staff.
Newman Events
At J.H. Newman School, we organize a wide range of events and initiatives involving both teachers and students, all aimed at fostering the growth of the entire educational community. These activities help connect school life with the personal and cultural development of everyone involved.
Some of our most well-known events include:
#SAC Newman (Arts and Sciences Week), University Fair, Christmas Campaign, Newman Cafés, Family Gatherings, and Open House Day, among many others.
All of our events are open to the public—we welcome anyone who wants to get to know us. You’re invited!
