School theatre
Theatre is a key discipline at J.H. Newman International School, integrated into every stage of education. It’s a powerful tool for student development—enhancing oral and body expression, stimulating creativity, building teamwork, improving improvisation skills, and boosting self-esteem.
Leaving the classroom for the auditorium transforms the experience: a space without desks or textbooks, where the student takes center stage—just as they are.
EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
In Early Childhood Education, drama is encouraged through activities linked to oral and physical expression. All groups participate in theatre or musical performances for the Christmas Festival and the Musical Festival.
Throughout the year, storytelling, musical performances, and theatre in English further develop drama and expressive skills.
PRIMARY EDUCATION
In Years 3 and 4 of Primary, theatre is incorporated into the language curriculum to support oral expression.
In Year 3, students explore expressive tools like body, facial, and vocal use, and theatre-specific techniques such as avoiding turning their backs to the audience, using the full stage, and improvisation. Through personal contributions and creative work, students prepare short performances that culminate in a final production.
By Year 4, with those skills internalized, they work directly with written texts and literary styles—narrative, poetry, storytelling, and more—with a deeper focus on poetic expression.
SECONDARY AND BACCALAUREATE
In Year 12 (1º Bachillerato), students can volunteer to take part in a major theatrical production performed in late May.
From the initial script reading to rehearsals, casting, set and costume design, and final staging, the project offers a comprehensive experience in dramatic arts.
Rehearsals begin in January due to the project’s scale.
Newman Choir
The J.H. Newman Choir is part of AGRUPACOROS, the first choral association for children and youth in the Community of Madrid.
Choral singing is a priority in our educational project. Singing together fosters beauty, cultural understanding, and emotional depth.
Students join the Primary Choir at age 8, learning the fundamentals of posture, diction, melody memorization, following a conductor, and blending their voices—while enjoying the joy of singing as one.
In Secondary and Sixth Form, students begin exploring polyphony and harmony—singing pieces ranging from ancient music to spirituals, jazz, and traditions from Spain, Italy, America, and Africa.
GUEST VISITS
ISABEL REY
Devoted heart and soul to her vocation—singing, music, and theatre—the Valencian soprano Isabel Rey has earned international acclaim for her exquisite vocal technique and refined sensitivity as a performer. She is one of the few Spanish artists to have collaborated regularly with the Salzburg Festival, and her distinguished career has seen her debut on the most prestigious opera stages around the world.
During her visit with the members of both Newman Choirs (Primary, Secondary, and Sixth Form), she shared how her career began by singing in her school choir in Valencia.
DIANA TIEGS
Born in Nampa, Idaho (USA), Diana Tiegs began her vocal and dramatic arts studies at Boise State University. After settling in Spain, she continued her training at the Escuela Superior de Canto de Madrid, completing her studies in 1997. She has refined her technique and interpretation under the guidance of Ian Baar and Miguel Zanetti.
Among her early performances are Vivaldi’s Gloria, Haydn’s The Creation, the Stabat Mater by both Pergolesi and Rossini, Honegger’s La Danse des Morts, Bach’s Magnificat, and the role of Adina in Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore.
In recent years, she has taken on roles such as Konstanze in Mozart’s The Abduction from the Seraglio, Faure’s Requiem at the Palau de la Música in Valencia, the leading soprano voice in Wolfgang Rihm’s Jakob Lenz, Beethoven’s Egmont, Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Dulcinea in Cristóbal Halffter’s opera Don Quixote at Madrid’s Teatro Real.
She is currently a member of the Spanish National Choir. Her visit to the school was part of the “Adopt a Musician” project, which included participation from members of the Primary Choir.

Conferences and guest visits
The school regularly organizes conferences, events, and meetings to enrich students’ educational experience. These moments offer opportunities to engage with experts and explore key themes connected to the academic program.
Radio Newman
RADIO NEWMAN is the school radio station of Newman School. Produced by pupils and teachers, it broadcasts the school’s latest news every Friday.
Our school radio is an extraordinary tool for working with pupils across each of the curricular areas, from improving linguistic competence to achieving greater personal and social development in a dynamic and free space.
RADIO NEWMAN gives a voice to the whole educational community in an international school that opens you up to the world.
It is linked, on the one hand, to the school’s language plan and, on the other, to the subjects of audiovisual communication. This enables pupils to develop oral expression, as well as the tools that help them communicate better with their environment. Radio, in addition to serving as a meeting place for the educational community, offers pupils the chance to use their voice to convey both what they see and what they feel, adding a fuller, more creative dimension to their own person, with a strong interest in the world around them and a hypothesis and judgement about the events that take place in it.

Newman Extracurricular Activities
Extracurricular activities (all voluntary, non-profit and non-discriminatory) are one of the school’s most significant initiatives and an extension of its educational proposal.
Through them, in addition to occupying free time with recreational activities, we aim to enable the growth of the whole person in those areas in which pupils can best recognise themselves, giving rise to the expression of their best abilities.
To achieve this goal, it is very important that pupils commit to the activities they sign up for throughout the school year.
REGISTRATION CONDITIONS
- Registration is carried out with an annual commitment. However, if cancellation is required, it must be communicated before the 20th day of the current month. Otherwise, the amount charged will not be refunded. The email address to request cancellation is nbravo@colegionewman.org. Cancellations must always be communicated through this email address and are not processed through the teacher who teaches the extracurricular activity. To register, the corresponding form for each stage must be completed for each pupil.
- Registrations for all sports at any educational stage are carried out through the Sports Club (https://cdnewman.clupik.app/). They will not appear as registered in CIFRA.
- Each year, pupils must register again for the extracurricular activity they wish to take.
- Priority will be given to pupils who, having registered again within the corresponding period, are former pupils of the extracurricular activity for which they register.
- The activity is subject to a minimum number of pupils in order to take place.
- If a pupil is registered for several extracurricular activities, families must carefully check the timetables to avoid incompatibilities. However, in Early Childhood Education it is recommended that pupils do not take more than one activity in order to facilitate their free time in the playground.
- From September onwards, you will be able to check in CIFRA whether pupils are registered in the activities for which you have signed them up.

DANCE SCHOOL (EARLY YEARS)

MUSIC SCHOOL (EARLY YEARS)
With this activity, children have their first contact with the elements that make up musical language: melody, rhythm and harmony. Through a class based on play, songs, listening, movement and instruments, pupils learn to recognise and enjoy music naturally.
The aim is to awaken musical sensitivity from the earliest years, foster attention, memory, coordination and creativity, and help children discover the value and beauty of music.
Classes will be made up only in the event of the pupil’s illness and provided that the school is notified the day before the class by writing to the music school email address (edmliceo@hotmail.com).

Our commitment, taking into account public holidays and holiday periods, is to guarantee 3 classes per month.

CHOIR (PRIMARY)
The Primary Choir is a free activity that the school offers outside school hours. This extracurricular activity works on the aspects and virtues that choral singing can offer, such as educating sensitivity and a taste for beauty, teamwork, listening skills, attention, perseverance, sacrifice, commitment and respect.
No previous experience is necessary, as the dynamics of the sessions help pupils learn to sing with technique and naturalness at the same time.
The Primary and Secondary choirs are free activities. This year we want to give a special boost to the Primary Choir, as we believe that together with the Secondary and Adult choirs we will be able to continue taking part in different events, festivals and competitions, which will surely once again lead us to win important awards, especially in the Community of Madrid.

PAINTING AND SCULPTURE (PRIMARY)
Visual arts are much more than mixing colours and applying brushstrokes to a blank canvas. With this activity, we aim to bring children closer to Fine Arts, awakening creativity and sensitivity through well-known artistic examples and everyday surroundings using visual language.
As it lies outside the school curriculum, it can be a perfect tool for beginning to develop inner calm, since painting is an art that requires a good dose of patience and dedication.
Through this activity, pupils indirectly learn aspects related to size, patterns, shapes and even geometry. In addition, art helps children develop problem-solving skills and encourages self-discipline and self-motivation. All of this takes place in a “unique” space at the school where children feel like true artists!

BASKETBALL (PRIMARY, SECONDARY SCHOOL AND SENIOR)
The main objective is to promote sport, as we consider it an opportunity to educate with the advantages of being an activity freely chosen, attractive, and motivating for the student. Joining an activity means commitment. Feeling committed to the team and fellow members dignifies the athlete and the person. Therefore, competition is just another part of the training. It depends on adults that it remains positive. We must help students understand that the group prevails over individualism, and that while the sports result is important, it should not come at any cost; the end does not justify the means.

ITALIAN (SECONDARY AND BACCALAUREATE)
The promotion of Italian at our school (its language and culture) is a key part of our curriculum, which begins in Year 1 of Secondary School (ESO).
At Newman, we have always valued education in beauty and providing our students with a global perspective. Therefore, learning the language of the “Bel Paese,” as Italy is known, is part of one of our core linguistic objectives.
By offering Italian as an extracurricular activity, we also provide the opportunity for students to delve deeper into the language, advancing their learning in a faster and more comprehensive way. This allows them to prepare for official certifications. We also open the offer to external students and adults (parents) who are interested in the language and wish to begin or deepen their studies.

SPEECH AND LANGUAGE STIMULATION
Through our speech therapy service, we assess, diagnose, and provide intervention when children require additional support at any stage of their school life due to difficulties in:
- Speech: articulation difficulties (dyslalia), stuttering, etc.
- Language: both oral (language delays) and written (dyslexia, learning difficulties, etc.).
- Communication: ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorders).
- Swallowing: difficulties related to correct swallowing patterns.
Our primary goal is to provide children with a learning-friendly environment where they can acquire the skills required to thrive in their surroundings. To achieve this, we build on abilities they have already mastered, helping them develop new competencies and knowledge.
Throughout the learning process, special attention is given to the emotional dimension. We aim to ensure that children attend sessions feeling happy, comfortable, and confident, creating the best conditions for learning and achieving the objectives established together.
We maintain regular communication with families via email and telephone, as scheduling does not allow for meetings after each session.

Family gatherings
The Family School, or Family Gathering, is a space where we offer, from the heart of our educational identity, a perspective and approach for facing the educational challenges that arise in our students—and in our own children—in a thoughtful, human, and reasoned way.
Rather than simply offering lectures or expert-led talks with ready-made answers, our aim is to foster guided dialogue that enriches us and helps build strong, meaningful educational relationships with our children and students.
The Family School typically meets once a month, each session focusing on a different theme. All families from the school community are welcome, as well as friends and anyone interested. We look forward to seeing you there!
Newman Guidance
What do we do?
Everyone can learn and make progress, but not all students learn in the same way or at the same pace. In class, we often encounter students who, for different reasons, face learning difficulties. At Colegio Internacional J.H. Newman, a team of professionals supports students with diverse learning needs by adapting content and applying a variety of teaching strategies to ensure a personalized learning experience. This may include allowing extra time, adjusting exercises, or modifying assessments. All of these efforts contribute to our goal of being a truly inclusive school.
Inclusion at Newman involves a range of strategies designed to respond appropriately to the unique characteristics and educational needs of our students.
Increasingly, as part of a collaborative teaching model, more than one teacher may be present in the classroom. This allows the lead teacher to work alongside a support teacher, enabling closer individual attention and the implementation of specific adaptations to help students learn according to their needs and abilities.
EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
In Early Childhood Education, the Guidance Department includes a school counselor, a psychomotor development specialist, a therapeutic pedagogy specialist (PT), and a speech and language specialist. This team works closely with classroom and subject teachers to identify and address the specific needs of each student, ensuring that every child receives the support they need.
Through classroom observation and standardized assessments, the team identifies possible learning difficulties across different areas of development. They then design targeted interventions to support students with specific educational needs, ensuring their full inclusion through direct and focused assistance.
Some of our students have official educational support plans (dictámenes de escolarización) that require us to tailor objectives and content to their individual learning profiles. These students receive personalized support, both in and out of the classroom, in individual or small group settings.
PRIMARY EDUCATION
In Primary, we have a significant number of students with neurodevelopmental diagnoses or developmental differences that require individualized support. Our aim is to ensure equal access to the academic curriculum for all students through appropriate accommodations—ranging from minor methodological adjustments to more significant curricular adaptations, depending on each student’s specific needs.
At Newman, we face ongoing challenges that inspire us to keep improving the support we offer. Our current priorities include:
Improving early identification of student needs
Referring students for diagnosis and maintaining clear internal communication among staff
Developing individualized learning plans
Providing targeted support and stimulation
Coordinating closely with teaching staff
Adjusting support strategies based on student progress
Communicating and working with families
SECONDARY EDUCATION
For our older students, the Guidance Department continues to provide personalized and specialized support. The objectives at this stage include:
Providing individual follow-up for students who need it, with the help of support teachers
Implementing significant curricular or methodological adaptations when required
Carrying out psychoeducational evaluations for students who need them
Preparing official educational support plans (dictámenes de escolarización) for new students entering the integration program in Secondary
Informing families and students about enrichment programs for gifted students, and applying flexibility measures if necessary
Applying reinforcement measures in line with current educational regulations
Informing students about the Curriculum Diversification Programs available to them
Offering compensatory education when needed
Facilitating coordination with local social and educational services
Providing academic and career guidance
Supporting tutors in their work with students through tutorial sessions
Our objectives
PERSONAL SUPPORT
Providing individualised support for pupils in their educational needs.
CONNECTION AND COMMUNICATION
Maintaining ongoing relationships and working closely with both tutors and pupils’ families.
PREVENTION
Focusing on prevention through initial observation of pupils and the delivery of various informative talks.
IDENTIFICATION AND SUPPORT
Identifying pupils with specific needs and providing them with appropriate attention and stimulation.
ADAPTATIONS
Preparing curriculum adaptations, reports, assessments, and any other necessary documentation.
Speech and Language Therapy Department
The Speech and Language Therapy Department operates as an extracurricular activity offered by the school. Our work involves assessing and supporting children who, at some point in their school journey, may require additional help due to difficulties in:
Speech (articulation disorders, structural speech difficulties, stammering, etc.)
Oral language (language delay, developmental language disorder)
Written language (reading and writing delay, dyslexia, dysgraphia, learning difficulties related to other conditions, etc.)
Communication (Autism Spectrum Disorder or other pervasive developmental disorders)
Voice (voice disorders)
Therapy sessions take place on school premises between 13:00 and 15:00 and are delivered individually (occasionally in pairs if deemed appropriate and beneficial to the child).
Before beginning therapy, and in the case that the child has not previously been assessed, an initial evaluation will be carried out to identify specific difficulties and determine the starting point for intervention.
As well as working directly on the child’s difficulties, we maintain close contact with the family to provide support and guidance regarding their child’s needs.

Further information
The Guidance Department plays a key role in coordinating and implementing the school’s educational activity. It is an active agent in shaping and supporting the educational project, academic planning, and the school’s pedagogical and didactic approach.
It supports and advises teaching staff in the design and development of teaching and learning processes, in methodology and didactics, in assessment systems, and in the creation of programmes that ensure the student’s all-round education.
It promotes activities that contribute to the understanding, monitoring and guidance of students.
The department offers personalised attention to individual differences and learning difficulties, through personalised support and intervention, and by planning and developing teaching processes both inside and outside the classroom.
It strengthens the school’s tutorial system which accompanies students in their personal development, emotional maturity, and vocational discernment.
With the student at the centre of its mission, the department seeks to provide support and guidance in all areas of life: academic, relational, family, personal and vocational.
All services offered by the department are voluntary, non-profit and non-discriminatory.
Newman Emprende
Some years ago, a group of parents—motivated by the social and economic climate—decided to respond collectively to the challenges they faced. From this shared concern, Newman Emprende was born: a network of businesses and services made available to the families of the school community, aiming to support and strengthen one another.
Newman Emprende is rooted in the real and vibrant community of J.H. Newman International School. It is within this shared reality that personal encounters and human relationships naturally grow. Instead of traditional networking, which starts by looking for businesses run by our friends, we begin by connecting with friends—who happen to run businesses.
The initiative reflects a truly collective effort that involves every part of the school community: from the school leadership, the parent association (AMPA), and the Newman Sports Club, to the collaboration of teachers and maintenance staff.
Newman Events
At the Colegio Internacional J.H. Newman, we organize a wide range of events and initiatives involving both teachers and students, all aimed at fostering the growth of the entire educational community. These activities help connect school life with the personal and cultural development of everyone involved.
Some of our most well-known events include:
#SAC Newman (Arts and Sciences Week), University Fair, Christmas Campaign, Newman Cafés, Family Gatherings and Open House Day, among many others.
All of our events are open to the public – we welcome anyone who wants to get to know us. You are invited!
